Join us at the Film
Center's Whitsell Auditorium,
Portland Art Museum,
on Sunday, January 15, 4 pm for a
screening of three rarely seen
episodes from NBC's famed "This Is
Your Life" television show.
The
programs offer a fascinating
window into how the Holocaust was
presented, and perceived, in
popular American culture during
the 1950's,
a decade before such films as "The
Pawnbroker."
In each episode of the show,
a surprise (and surprised) guest
would (in
early reality TV fashion) have
their life inspirationally
recapped by
host Ralph Edwards, with
testimonies from associates and
family members
dramatically incorporated.
The episodes we will screen
present the
stories of three women who
survived the Holocaust: HANNA
BLOCH (May 27,
1953), featuring the first
Holocaust survivor to describe her
experiences on national
television; ILSE STANLEY (November
2, 1955),
honoring a German actress who
helped free over 400 people from
concentration camps; and SARA
VEFFER (March 19, 1961), a Dutch
woman
whose family hid for 18 months in
a tiny attic.
Julie Kohner, daughter of
Hanna Bloch Kohner, will be in
attendance.
Join us for a post-film
reception
in the Portland
Art Museum’s Andrée Stevens
Room.
Tickets: $36, available in
